What is 6mm Creedmoor Ammo?

It is a necked-down version of the 6.5mm Creedmoor that uses bullets of 6 mm (.243 inch), which are lighter than 6.5 mm bullets, and which have similarly reduced recoil. It was designed by John Snow at Outdoor Life in 2009.

The performance of the 6mm Creedmoor is similar to that of the .243 Winchester with slightly less powder room, but with higher pressures.

History Of 6mm Creedmoor Rifle Ammo:

Originally, the 6mm Creedmoor cartridge was the result of an article by Outdoor Life columnist John Snow in 2007. He was an avid long-range shooter, and he was particularly interested in the brand new 6.5mm Creedmoor cartridge, which had just been released that year. His goal was to create a cartridge with even less recoil than the parent, but still capable of outstanding accuracy at 1,000 yards. He decided to use a 6.5 Creedmoor case necked down to hold 6mm bullets.

As of 2009, Snow combined the 6mm HOLE cartridge with a custom rifle designed by George Gardner of GA Precision. This rifle and cartridge did very well, and Snow’s essay about the project appeared in the August 2010 issue of Outdoor Life.

Even though Snow went on to work on other projects, the 6mm Creedmoor story didn’t end there. In 2004, Gardner was brainstorming ideas for how he could gain an advantage in the new Precision Rifle Series (PRS) that was gaining in popularity, and he remembered the project he’d worked on with Snow a few years earlier.

When Gardner realized that the 6mm Creedmoor cartridge would be great for PRS, he modified his AR-10 to utilize the new cartridge. After seeing how well the rifle and cartridge performed during the PRS competitions that year, other shooters started ordering 6mm Creedmoor rifles from Gardner. During the ensuing years, interest in this cartridge exploded.

In spite of the popularity of the 6mm Creedmoor among PRS championship competitors, it has a relatively small market in comparison to the general population of American shooters. However, the cartridge began gaining prominence among hunters. In 2017, Hornady and Ruger began selling factory 6mm Creedmoor ammunition and rifles in response to growing consumer demand in the United States.

The demand for 6mm Creedmoor rifles has increased since then, and manufacturers such as Browning, Montana Rifle Company, Nosler, and Savage have joined Ruger in producing the rifles. Additionally, Barnes, Federal, Nosler, and Remington all produce factory ammo for the 6mm Creedmoor gun cartridge.

Is 6mm Creedmoor better than 6.5 Creedmoor?

The 6.5mm Creedmoor has several advantages over the 6mm Creedmoor, including being able to fire heavier, larger diameter, and more aerodynamic bullets, but at a slower rate. It is, for this reason, the 6-mm Creedmoor has less recoil and follows a flatter trajectory, whereas the heavier and larger diameter 6.5-mm Creedmoor bullets have a larger frontal surface area, are more resistant to wind drift, and provide a greater transfer of energy downrange.
